Understanding per-segment and per-message

What is an SMS Segment?

  • A single SMS message can contain many segments depending on the number of characters, emojis, or special characters used. Hustle includes an in-product segment estimator to make math easy while drafting messages.
  • Segments are calculated by the wireless carriers, not by texting platforms or Hustle
  • For example, a standard segment contains 160 characters. Say you drafted a message that contained 150 characters, with zero emoji or special characters – that message would count as 1 segment. If you had a message that contained 150 characters, one or more of which were emojis or special characters, your message would count as 3 segments.
  • Adding an emoji or special character to your message changes the way that segments are calculated by the wireless carriers.
  • Some other platforms might refer to segments as “credits”

Why should I consider a per-segment price?

  • You send shorter messages and don’t overuse emojis
  • You’re cost-conscious and want control of your message cost (send a shorter message, pay less)
  • You want to pay-as-you-go
    • Segment plans are available for annual commitments and PAYGO
    • Pay-as-you-go plans are only available in segments.

Why should I consider a per-message price?

  • You send messages of varying lengths
  • You love a good emoji
  • You don’t want to do math to know how much a given campaign will cost – every message will always cost the same
